Provide more in-depth detail on our chosen industry sector, including:

  • Definition of sector characteristics
  • Types of IT involved
  • Examples of customers in NZ
  • Sources of information for future studies

Technology Sector;

To research the following software platforms:

  • Open source Jabber IM XML protocol for P2P data exchange
  • Microsoft Greenwich for enterprise instant messaging
  • Microsoft Desktop Centre Site for Win XP Tools

Week 3:

29th March - 6th April 2003

Technology Sector;

To clarify and improve the discussion papers written on the software platforms:

  • Open source Jabber IM XML protocol for P2P data exchange
  • Microsoft Greenwich for enterprise instant messaging

To research the following software platform/resource:

  • Microsoft Desktop Centre Site for Win XP Tools

Knowledge Base;

To inspect and evaluate the current state of the Knowledge Base infrastructure

  • Plan a course of necessary actions for continued development of the Knowledge Base structure.
  • Document the findings and proposed course of action

Week 4 & 5:

6th April - 20th April 2003

Industry Sector;

Refer to the Tech Briefing 28/11/02 Notes on Industry. Research any developments relating to Linux that have occurred since the last report. Include details such as:

  • Commercial aspects
  • Real world use of the technology
  • Improvements and updates since the last report

Technology Sector;

Start version control on the discussion papers. Update and edit the reports previously written on the following topics:

  • Open source Jabber IM XML protocol for P2P data exchange
  • Microsoft Greenwich for enterprise instant messaging

Week 6:

Research the topic of 'Implementing and supporting a small business with a Red Hat Server and 10 Red Hat Desktops, for file sharing, e-mail, Internet access, accounting system and general office productivity, in terms of software & skills required'

 

Week 7:

26th April - 3rd May 2003

Industry/Technology Sector;

Continue to research the topic of 'Implementing and supporting a small business with a Red Hat Server and 10 Red Hat Desktops, for file sharing, e-mail, Internet access, accounting system and general office productivity, in terms of software & skills required' Add to current report and update to version 0.2. Split technical details into separate discussion papers.

 

Week 8 & 9:

10th May - 23rd May 2003

Industry/Technology Sector;

Continue to research the topic of 'Implementing and supporting a small business with a Red Hat Server and 10 Red Hat Desktops, for file sharing, e-mail, Internet access, accounting system and general office productivity, in terms of software & skills required.

  • Modify main report, and update to version 0.4, to include recommendations and justifications for them.
  • Research accounting software available for Linux as well as Windows-based applications and the corresponding emulators.
  • Apply researched data to real life network installation
  • Update Hardware Compatibility List to include the appropriate kernel version

Week 10 - 12:

6th June - 28th June 2003

Industry/Technology Sector;

Continue to research the topic of 'Implementing and supporting a small business with a Red Hat Server and 10 Red Hat Desktops, for file sharing, e-mail, Internet access, accounting system and general office productivity, in terms of software & skills required.

  • Research Installation guide for fat client/full blown desktops with Red Hat 9.0
  • Compare/contrast the 3 previously mentioned accounting software from a system administrator or architects perspective
  • Research Windows accounting software that can be successfully run on Linux using an emulation tool.

Knowledge Base;

Review and agree on an Action Plan for the continued development of the KB

 

Week 13 & 14:

13th July - 27th July 2003

Industry/Technology Sector;

Continue to research the topic of 'Implementing and supporting a small business with a Red Hat Server and 10 Red Hat Desktops, for file sharing, e-mail, Internet access, accounting system and general office productivity, in terms of software & skills required.

  • Research the hardware compatibility of Kernel 2.2, 2.4 and 2.5/2.6
  • Compare/contrast the 3 previously mentioned accounting software from a system administrator or architects perspective and provide a recommendation.
  • Research the criteria for Windows accounting software that can be successfully run on Linux using an emulation tool, WINE.

Knowledge Base;

Start on the construction phase of the KB, so that it can be used to archive our KB articles. Work on assigned project area and report back to Edmond as completed.

Week 14 & 15:

27th July - 8th August 2003

Industry/Technology Sector;

Continue to research the topic of 'Implementing and supporting a small business with a Red Hat Server and 10 Red Hat Desktops, for file sharing, e-mail, Internet access, accounting system and general office productivity, in terms of software & skills required.

  • Update the accounting software available for Linux. Compare/contrast the packages from a system administrator or architects perspective and provide a recommendation.
  • Research the criteria for Windows accounting software that can be successfully run on Linux using an emulation tool, WINE.

Knowledge Base;

Continue on the construction phase of the KB, so that it can be used to archive our KB articles. Work on assigned project area and report back to Edmond as completed.

Week 16 & 17:

10th August - 23rd August 2003

Industry/Technology Sector;

Continue to research the topic of 'Implementing and supporting a small business with a Red Hat Server and 10 Red Hat Desktops, for file sharing, e-mail, Internet access, accounting system and general office productivity, in terms of software & skills required.

  • Research the criteria for Windows accounting software that can be successfully run on Linux using an emulation tool, WINE.
  • Research popular open source file systems and compare/contrast them. Eg. NFS, XFS, JFS, ext3 etc.
  • Update Hardware Compatibility for kernel 2.2, 2.4 and 2.5/2.6.
  • Propose the software to be included for our Small Business server and what each of the software will do for our SB network.

Continue on the construction phase of the KB, so that it can be used to archive our KB articles. Work on assigned project area and report back to Edmond as completed.

 

Week 18 & 19:

24th August - 5th September 2003

Industry/Technology Sector;

Continue to research the topic of 'Implementing and supporting a small business with a Red Hat Server and 10 Red Hat Desktops, for file sharing, e-mail, Internet access, accounting system and general office productivity, in terms of software & skills required.

  • Find out what RPM (Red Hat Package Manager) is and how it makes life easier for users.
  • Research the criteria for Windows accounting software that can be successfully run on Linux using an emulation tool, WINE.
  • Identify the minimum IT or Linux skills for acting as a Network Administrator for installing and maintaining the Linux network.

Knowledge Base;

Aim to complete the construction phase of the KB, so that it can be used to archive our KB articles. Work on assigned project area and report back to Edmond as completed.

 

Week 20 & 21:

6th - 26th September 2003

 

Industry/Technology Sector;

Continue to research the topic of 'Implementing and supporting a small business with a Red Hat Server and 10 Red Hat Desktops, for file sharing, e-mail, Internet access, accounting system and general office productivity, in terms of software & skills required.

  • Research the criteria for Windows accounting software that can be successfully run on Linux using an emulation tool, WINE. Revise current report to v0.2.
  • Hardware Compatibility of kernel 2.2, 2.4 and 2.5/2.6. Update current report.
  • Identify the minimum IT or Linux skills for acting as a Network Administrator for installing and maintaining the Linux network.

Knowledge Base;

Finish off the construction phase of the KB, so that it can be used to archive our KB articles. Implement security features if time permits.

 

Week 22:

27th September - 5th October 2003

 
Final Week

Create a summary outlining topics researched throughout the duration of the project. Include a brief overview of each topic and relate your understanding back to theory and skills learnt at University. Preparation for a 20 minute presentation, which is to be given during the final meeting (may or may not include Powerpoint slides).

Finish off any work outstanding on reports and on the KB programming.
