Topics Currently Available for New Postgraduates

I am currently looking for postgraduate students to do research on the following topics:

Software Development on Tablets: How can we develop software on tablet devices? How should software tools for tablets work? This project will develop software development tools for tablet devices. Applicants should have experience with Android app development and have good programming skills.

Eye-Gaze Interaction: Can we use eye-gaze trackers as input devices, in some cases maybe even as a substiute for the mouse? Are there other exciting new ways to use them in interactive systems? This project will develop and evaluate interaction prototypes that enable users to control applications just by looking at them. Applicants should have an interest in HCI and user experiments, and good programming skills.

Model-based Software Tools: How can novel tools facilitate software development? This project will develop and evaluate concrete models and tools that allow software engineers to specify and generate enterprise applications. The will make use of triplestore technology. Applicants should have an interest in Software Engineering and ideally some experience with web applications and databases. They should also have good Java programming skills.

If you are interested in one of those topics and have the necessary skills, read the section below.

Applying for Postgraduate Studies

If you are considering postgraduate studies and are interested in my research, read on. Research is a competence that takes time and effort to learn. It can be very rewarding, but sometimes it is frustrating and tedious. If you decide to do postgraduate studies, you should be interested in the exploration of new ideas, learning about other people's work, problem solving, and making convincing scientific arguments. If you want to do postgraduate studies solely to get a degree, without enthusiasm for science, this may not be the right decision for you.

In the following I have collected some tips that will help you when applying for postgraduate studies to a potential supervisor:
  1. Academic transcripts: Provide your academic transcripts because there are grade requirements for admission to postgraduate degrees.
  2. Previous research experience: If you have any previous research experience, such as research projects you have worked on, show it.
  3. Publications: Writing skills are very important for research-oriented degrees. If you can provide some evidence that you know how to write up research concisely and convincingly, this will help a lot. Provide copies of theses, project reports, or best of all, published papers where you have made a significant contribution.
  4. Communication skills: Show that you know how to communicate clearly by using good English in your communication with a potential supervisor. If you are not a native English speaker and you haven't studied at an English-speaking university, you should provide a language proficiency certificate such as IELTS.
  5. Funding: It is important that you have funding for your studies, e.g. self-funded or in the form of a scholarship.

If you feel this is for you, please feel free to contact me to discuss possible supervision. If you are intersted in research and get accepted for postgraduate studies in my research group, we will help you gain competence as a researcher, elaborate novel ideas using proper scientific methodology, and publish your results in the scientific community.
