SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER Achievements Class Final Presentation This was delivered to 340 students and project sponsors, to let them have an understanding of our developed solution. It included a live demonstration of our product and we took the class through an assessment using our system. User Documentation The User Documentation has been produced for the PDA system and the Desktop/Laptop system. The documentation includes setting up our program, how to use the various interfaces and connection of the PDA to the Desktop/Laptop. Technical Documentation The Technical Documentation has been written which fully documents every aspect of our system. It includes Use Case Diagrams, Class Diagrams, Activity Diagrams, Sequence Diagrams, Database ERD, CRUD Matrix, Hardware Software specifications and a Vision Document. Completion of Development The product has been fully developed not only meeting are sponsors requirements, but exceeding them in many aspects. We have stress tested our solution with an enormous amount of stress test data, and worked through a test plan we developed. Diary 15/10/2004 Project Exhibition was this day, very successful event! Deserved a beer at the end! 7/10/2004 We had the final Handover this day, all went well and the Navy awarded us with a grade of 97%. 1/10/2004 - 5/10/2004 Produced a Technical Documentation, User Manuals for various parts of the system and a final report. Last minute Bugs were fixed. Documentation was handed to our sponsor 2 days before handover. 25/9/2004 - 30/9/2004 This period was used to fix bugs in the code and write the user documentation. 25/9/2004 The Final Class presentation happened and we presented our final solution to the class. We organized a role-play which saw us assessing them as if they were in the navy. 20/9/2004-24/9/2004 Worked on the Presentation 1/9/2004 - 20/8/2004 Polished off Form Generator tool, Interim Report, and Created a Search Evaluation Page. We also Linked the various parts of our system together. AUGUST Achievements Report Generation and Analysis We completed the Report Generator by reading in Xml files to the database from the PDAs. The Report is generated from the Database, which will show all the evaluators answers for a particular form. This is editable and then a final Word Document of the Report is produced. Completion of PDA Subsystem We have completed the subsystem for the PDA. This was stress tested with an actual iPAQ PDA. The software passes these tests and we are currently using Active Sync in linking the data to the Laptop Subsystem. Form Generation Tool We have completed the Form Generator. We are just working on a better layout of the controls at the moment. Database Finalised We have finalised and completed the database structure to store the Form data. Diary 30/8/2004 Changed layout of Form Generator Tool, to have a more form friendly view with the use of Tabs. 20/8/2004 Started work on the Interim Report. 2/8/2004 - 20/8/2004 Worked on the Form Generator tool 2/8/2004 Updated Website, Integrated Database with Form Generator Tool JULY Achievements Mid-Year Report This report documented our activities, issues, and achievements for the past few months. It was due on the day of the workshop (2 July). We used a methodical approach to developing this report, bringing together the information contained within the Monthly Reports and our own knowledge that we have of at the start of the project up to this point. Workshop This was held in Henderson on Friday 2nd July 2004. Jinny and Gary attended this and presented a 5 min presentation about the ‘Meeting our project 340 Challenges’, it involved a short audio clip and a derivation of our Mid-Year Report including any advice we could give to the other students that we found useful from experience in doing this project. Database We are taking a phased approach to implementing our database; we found that implementing our ERD as a whole was un-practical as it constantly needed changing, instead we are adding tables to the database as we need them. It is currently being developed in Access, consideration for SQL Server 2000 is still continuing, but it should not be much of a problem transferring the data as MS SQL Server 2000 provides a facility for this type of operation. XML Structure We have generated an XML structure for the blank and completed forms that the PDA will be using to read and generate the forms from. This is however not yet finalised, therefore it is most likely to change as the database changes. We have entered test data into the database and confirmed this XML structure with the PDA to populate the interface. Form Structure Upon consultation with Kelvin he has taken our recommendation of having a universal question structure applied to our forms. This structure consists of a NA checkbox, The Question Label, Yes/No Radio Buttons and a Note checkbox. This enables us to easily design the form as the format is standard across all forms. Subsystem Prototypes We have started our project prototyping; this has begun with a meeting involving goals and a plan of activities that will be involved within each of the prototype iterations. We have developed the PDA interface which is fully working with the emulator and we are currently waiting upon an actual PDA to arrive. The Form Generator interface has been finalised and implementation is well under way. Learning Mobile Technologies Upon Playing around with the PDA emulator and the compact framework all of our group members are becoming quite proficient in programming Mobile devices. A number of issues have occurred, but with time spent researching we have solved all of the problems. Problems that have occurred and overcome will be discussed in the issues section. Diary 2/7/2004 - 31/7/2004 Development work has begun. We have as of 21/7/2004 3 subsystems working nicely consisting of a database the PDA, and a Form Generator. 2/7/2004 Gary and Jinny attended a Workshop, I had to go to my Grandmas 80th Birthday down in ChCh with my whole family. JUNE Achievements Harbour Safety Check The harbour safety check was carried out on the 3rd of June. During this visit we got shown some of the completed forms and also a brief description of activities, this included a hands on demonstration of various evaluations that occur during this phase of the MOET Operations. We were also introduced to some of the activities that would occur during the Sea Safety Check. Sea Safety Check On the 10th of June we went out on the Te Kaha where the MOET Team carried a sea safety check. We stayed in the ship overnight, during this period we observed most of the Sea Safety Check evaluations. Such as Toxic Gas, Man Overboard, Machinery Space Fire and injured casualties. From these exercises we had a greater understanding of the MOET’s operations and how our project would help them in the evaluations. Development Machine issue resolved Ian Ris came back from Germany, and he resolved the issues with the development machines. It turned out that one of the staff forgot to put in the order to Dell. However it is all sorted and we have received our laptops during the exam period. Database Set up Upon consultation with various MOET members, we have decided upon choosing SQL Server 2000 as our Database Platform, instead of Microsoft Access. We have yet to finalise our ERD due to scope changes and exams taking up most of our time in the Month of June. Exams We had our exam period from 7th to 26th of June. During this period we all decided to have time off the project to focus on our own exam studies. Now that our exams have finished we will go full steam on the project. Diary 5/6/2004-25/6/2004 Exams were right through this month. Project will resume after they are finished. 16/6/2004 We picked up our new laptops from the Navy. Pretty mean machines. 10/6/2004 Right after we got off the ship, we had a meeting with Lech. Discussing our plans for June and exams. 9/6/2004 We did as Sea safety Check which was an overnight cruise around Auckland, during which there were major exercises like loss of Steering, a major Fire in the hull of the ship, Man overboard etc. It was really cool and a great experience for us. We learnt a lot in how the Moet gathers information on the exercises. 3/6/2004 Mat Williams personally escorted us around Te-kaha showing us the inner workings of the battle ship. Pretty Cool, especially the weapons. 1/6/2004 Handed in the May Monthly Report MAY Achievements Specification Document From the System Analysis and Design Process we derived a Project Specification. This had in-depth analysis of the proposed system as well as technical details. It was the bulk amount of our time at the start of the month. Specification Presentation This was delivered
to 340 students and project sponsors, to let them have an
understanding of the technical side of the project. It
included details of the technologies that will be used and
testing procedures that will be applied. We have researched a wide variety of wireless technologies including Infra Red, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. We have concluded that a 802.11b wireless network will be the ideal solution with an access point set up in the conference room. Research into PDA selection and criteria This research has been carried out in terms of battery-life, functionality, processor speeds, and this was also evaluated with respect to the Navy having a contract with Dell. In the end we concluded that the Pocket PC model Axim X30 would be the best choice in both functionality and purchase wise. Research into PDA Programming Languages (both Palm and PocketPC) Research on the programming languages has been carried out, and we have gone with the Navy’s preference of VB .NET. This corresponds well with the chosen PDA device, Pocket PC because each member of the group is quite competent in using VB .NET. Research into Data input methods Research was done with respect to a stylus using a pop-up keyboard or Optical character recognition. The option of exploring plug in devices for input was explored but deemed too bulky and inconvenient to carry around the ship. Systems Design We have looked into the form layout of a PDA comparing to a windows form layout. The PDA screen can only display a limited amount of data at one time. While a windows form can almost fit in a whole form. This has been taken into consideration by us and we have worked out how to adapt these forms to accommodate the restricted screen size. Diary 28/5/2003 A new project Supervisor: Mat Williams. Peter Buell and him basically swapped jobs from the executive officer of Te-kaha to the MOET Co-Ordinator 19/5/2003 Updated Website: Added a project page with more details about our project. What the problem is, are objectives, and some pictures of what the final solution looks like. 15/5/2003 Handed in Project Specification. We also did are presentation to the class. Peter participated in our presentation, which went down well with everyone! 8/5/2003 - 15/5/2003 Worked on producing the 80 page specification document, and preparing presentation slides for the class. 7/5/2003 I researched into Wireless LAN's as part of our analysis for the specification. Decided to go with Wi-Fi over Bluetooth. 3/5/2003 Updated Website: Added Photos to photo page APRIL Achievements Schedule From the initiation and planning process we derived a Project Schedule. This contains a detailed analysis of the current system and its problems. It also outlines how the proposed system will help overcome those problems. Project Schedule Presentation This was delivered to 340 students and project sponsors on 17th April; the aim of the presentation is to let them have an understanding of our project and how we will be approaching it. Development
machines researched, identified and purchased Development software We did a comprehensive research on development software and presented our selection of the required software to the sponsor for purchasing. Security Passes All forms and documents in process of being assign to our group members. Diary 27/4/2003 Jinny and I went to the Navy finalising the purchase of Development Laptops. We had a meeting with the Subject Matter Experts in regard to what they want in the final system. 23/4/2003 We had a monthly meeting with Lech just to let him know what we been up to. Any concerns or issues we had. 17/4/2003 Handed in Project Schedule and delivered 1st Presentation to the class. We attended a Dinner at a very cheeky restaurant. MARCH
