Mark Gahegan is Director of the Centre for e-Research and Professor in the School of Geography, Geology and Environmental Science at the University of Auckland. He recently relocated to New Zealand, following nine years as Associate Director of the GeoVISTA Center for visualisation and spatial analysis research at Pennsylvania State University. His degrees are in the computing and information sciences. His research interests are at the interface of the natural and computational sciences, concentrating on eResearch, knowledge representation, visualisation and geographical information science.

Synopsis: "eResearch" is the application of modern, high-performance computing to scientific research. It is a broad and fast-growing field in its own right, covering established and emerging compute platforms, computer-supported collaborative work, computational semantics, support for domain-specific tools and services, and information science methodologies. Here we introduce the New Zealand eResearch initiative, and the associated BeSTGRID network, along with examples of the research that is being undertaken, both locally and nationwide.
