Computer Science

Assignments: COMPSCI 732 Semester 1, City Campus

The 50% coursework mark will be based on a research report (35 percent towards the final mark and groupwork (15 percent towards the final mark) based on a single topic that will be distributed. This is the topic assignment . but not every group might get the preferred topic.

Research projects, supervised by Sebastian

Please choose a topic from:

  • SW1 - Social Semantic Web
  • SW2 - Ontologies and the Semantic Web
  • SW3 - Semantic Web Search Engines
  • SW4 - eScience
  • SW5 - Knowledge Management in Large Organizations
  • SW6 - eBusiness
  • SW7 - eGovernment
  • SW8 - Multimedia, Broadcasting, and eCulture
  • SW9 - Semantic Web Services
  • SW10 - Tools for the Semantic Web.
The presentation and research report for topics SW1-9 shall include:
  1. title,
  2. abstract,
  3. scientific and technical overview,
  4. example applications,
  5. future issues, and
  6. references.
For topic SW10 please choose one specific tool and include the following in your presentation and your research report:
  • 0) title,
  • 1) abstract,
  • 2) tool functionality overview,
  • 3) example demonstration,
  • 4) future considerations, and
  • 5) references.

Implementation projects, supervised by Gerald

Gerald's projects are implementation projects that are based around the research database PDStore, an active temporal and transactional triplestore that has been used for a couple of years now in several postgraduate courses in the past. The projects come with a well defined baseline on which to build the software. However, vice versa they require a bit of study of the relevant libraries of PDStore. All implementation projects have to meet regularly with Gerald or project-specific tutors and follow agreed requirements. The topics are falling into two groups: tools and infrastructure. The tool topics are new or improved collaborative lightweight tools following a given standard architecture. The infrastructure tasks involve implementing an improved component in place of an existing component in PDStore, and providing sufficient evaluation in terms of performance experiments and unit test cases.

  • T1 - A collaborative 3D sketchpad
  • T2 - A collaborative graphics editor with scene graph features, layers and groups
  • T3 - A collaborative editor for free form painting
  • T4 - A collaborative, operation-based calendar
  • T5 - A collaborative, operation-based editor for natural language
  • T6 - A collaborative content management system
  • I1 - A steal/no-force index for an active temporal triplestore
  • I2 - A replication service for an active temporal triplestore
  • I3 - A federation portal an active temporal triplestore
  • I4 - A deductive query language frontend based on free variable substitution
The research report for Gerald's topics shall include:
  • title,
  • abstract
  • introduction
  • background and related work (from peer-reviewed sources)
  • requirements
  • design
  • implementation (algorithms, other high-level descriptions with pointers into the code)
  • evaluation, test design and issues or limitations of the system
  • conclusion
  • references
Also, not counting towards the page limit:
  • Appendix A) Own contributions and weighting of contribution
  • Appendix B) Reflection on teamwork
The interim presentation should include the following:
  • 0) title
  • 1) background and related work from peer-reviewed sources
  • 2) design plan
  • 3) evaluation plan
  • 4) if possible a demo of a prototype
  • 5) a slide with full references
The demo should include the following:
  • 0) title,
  • 1) design
  • 2) tool demo
  • 3) evaluation results
