Dr. Shafiq Alam Burki

ShafiqShafiq Alam received his Ph.D. degree from University of Auckland, New Zealand. He got his Master of Computer Science (MCS) and Master of Information Technology (MS-IT). He also holds a bachelor degree in Computer Science. He is currently a postdoctoral research fellow at the Department of Computer Science, University of Auckland. Dr. Shafiq has been reviewing for International Journals of high repute including IEEE Transaction On Evolutionary Computing, Journal of Swarm Intelligence, Journal of Information Sciences, IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics. He has also been reviewing for international conferences including PAKDD, ASONAM, Swarm Intelligence Symposium (SIS), AusDM, and DEXA. Shafiq Alam is the Program Chair of PAKDD workshop on "Biologically Inspired Techniques for Data Mining (BDM), Group Coordinator of Knowledge Management Group (KMG) at University of Auckland, Associate Editor of international journal on Network Modeling and Analysis in Health Informatics and Bioinformatics (NetMAHIB), PC member of International Symposium on Network Enabled Health Informatics, Biomedicine and Bioinformatics (HI-BI-BI 2012), and Member Institute of Electrical Electronic Engineers (IEEE).

Research Interest

I have been working in the area of evolutionary techniques for data mining and developed keen interest in the area of Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) based data clustering. I have developed hierarchcial algorithms based on Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) to cluster sparse and noisy web usage data. Some of the other area, which I have developed my interest in, are:

1. Swarm Intelligence based outlier detection

2. Swarm intelligence based recommender systems.

3. Mining heterogeneous data, and

4. Applying evolutionary techniques for change mining

Project

Currently my research includes the in-depth study of the following areas.

1. Develop an accurate and efficient model for Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) based data clustering

2. Study the behaviour of PSO based clustering techniques for Hierarchical agglomerative clustering (HAC)

3. Perform outlier detection using particle swarm optimization technique

4. Combining these 3 sub-projects to develop an intelligent recommendation system.

4. Mining Heterogeneous web usage data
