Majoring in Information Systems

Finding what courses you need to major in Information Systems and planning your degree in advance by using a degree planner will help you focus on learning what you really want to know.

The single major in Information Systems

This Bachelor of Science (BSc) major should appeal to students who are interested in computing processes that are applicable in the business environment. The COMPSCI courses are offered by the Computer Science Department in the Faculty of Science and the INFOSYS courses are offered by the Department of Information Systems and Operations Management in the Business School. The accounting course is also offered by the Business School and students will need to apply for a concession to enrol in it.

The requirements of the major are:

  • ACCTG 101
  • 4 courses from COMPSCI 210–280
  • INFOSYS 220, 222
  • INFOSYS 322

      Plus

  • at least 2 courses from COMPSCI 313–379
  • at least 2 course from INFOSYS 320–344

The Computer Science Department recommends that students take MATHS 108 and COMPSCI 111 as part of this major.

Students should be aware that the following courses are NOT part of the major, nor are they Science courses:
INFOSYS 110, INFOSYS 280 and INFOSYS 345.

When planning your Stage II courses, you should first look at the Stage III courses you would like to take, and plan the prerequisites for those accordingly. Please note that COMPSCI 280 is not a prerequisite for any Stage III course.

When planning your course selection, it is recommended that you use a degree planner for this major.

The double major in Information Systems and Computer Science

The Information Systems and Computer Science BSc double major is a very popular and powerful combination. The requirements for the double major are:

  • ACCTG 101
  • 4 courses from COMPSCI 210-280
  • INFOSYS 220, 222
  • at least 2 courses from COMPSCI 313-379
  • INFOSYS 322
  • at least 2 courses from INFOSYS 320-344
  • 3 more courses from COMPSCI 313-380

The Computer Science Department recommends that students take Information Systems as their first major so that at least 3 Stage III INFOSYS courses can be included in the degree.

Students should note that 8 Stage III courses are now required for this double major. Students should pay special attention to checking that they are completing the prerequisites for all 8 Stage III courses.

This is a complicated double major so students should plan their courses with care. The Department recommends that students complete a degree planner at the Science Student Centre every year of the degree.
