How to apply for the masters programme

Applicants for the MSc programme should have completed a BSc(Hons), a BTech, or a PGDipSci in Computer Science from the University of Auckland (or equivalent) with an average grade of at least B- in 90 points (six courses). At least 75 points (five courses) must be at 700-level.

  1. Apply for the MSc in Computer Science using Student Services Online. 
  2. Find a staff member to supervise your thesis by looking through the listing of staff research interests. You should also investigate our postgraduate research topics and past thesis topics.
  3. Inform the school's MSc coordinator of your application by emailing
  4. The MSc coordinator will approve your application once you and your supervisor have completed a Masters Approval Form (197KB PDF)
  5. Your application on Student Services Online must be approved by the MSc Coordinator and by the Faculty of Science. Then you will receive an offer of place on the masters programme. This step could take up to one week.
  6. Hand the signed Masters Approval Form to the Master Administrator in Room 303-388. She will enrol you into your courses. You will receive an invoice for your fees once this has been done.
  7. Within six weeks of enrolment, you should complete your thesis proposal. This should be done on a Thesis Proposal Form (257KB PDF)
  8. At the end of first semester of study (and also at the end of the second and third semester of study, for part-time students), you should submit a thesis progress report on the Thesis Progress Report Form (201KB PDF)
