Friday 8th March - Interview

Kiwiplan usually works with the students that they have already known in the past, i.e.their internship students, so they would like to get to know me and see how I might fit into their project. So today I had an interview with Tim Walker, the development manager at Kiwiplan and Ana Stilinovic, my industry mentor for the Kiwiplan BTech project. It took me about the whole day with an interview in the morning and Java algorithm exercises and OOP exercises in the afternoon. I also attended a one-hour representation to get a better understanding of the industry which Kiwiplan is in. I will be notified of the interview result next week.

Monday 11th March

My interview last week was successful and I will be doing my BTech project with Kiwiplan this year. Unfortunately my industry mentor, Ana, is away on a holiday and will not come back until next week, which means I cannot start my project until next week.

Thursday 21st March Day 1

It is my first day at Kiwiplan. Today is basically an overview of the project. Distributed Service Profiler was designed by a BTech student years ago, and it has been enhanced and modified by a few other BTech students. My job will be to extend the Distributed Service Profiler to intercept database queries. I could not start working on anything today because nothing is installed on my computer. So I only started reading Shelley Lowe's report on Distributed Service Profiler to get a general idea of how DSP works. Shelley was a BTech student and she did her project with Kiwiplan back to 2011. My work will be a continuity of hers.

Friday 22rd March Day2

Since Eclipse has been installed on my computer for me, I can start looking at the source code of the Distributed Service Profiler. Ana has also showed me how to run Tomcat and the DSP, and I experimented with it a little. I had a problem with Maven, which did not seem to be installed on my computer, so I spent some time looking into it and finally managed to get Maven working.

Wednesday 27th March Introductory Seminar

Today is the introductory seminar. Four of us BTech students together with a Compsci 751 student had our introductory seminar together. It is interesting to see how we are going to work on different projects and how we present ourselves. The next seminar is mid-year seminar, which will happen in the last teaching week of the first semester.

Thursday 28th March Day3

Ana said it would be good to make a plan for Semester One and follow the plan. So I went through Shelley's report to see what tasks need to be done and how long each tasks will take. Shelley has her own design in her report, but I do not have to follow her design, so I need to think about the design as well.
