Introductory Seminar

Project
A feasibility study into the various approaches of integrating Java and VB. In the process, evaluating the relative benefits and drawbacks of each approach from the perspectives of Deployment, Performance and Development Effort required to implement the solution.
Project Goals

  • To investigate the various methods of integrating Java and VB
    • COM Bridges
    • Replication and Messaging
    • SOAP RPC
    • CORBA
    • Other alternatives
  • To develop prototype implementations to establish proof-of-concept of the different approaches.
Project Rationale
ESP, an order-processing, estimation and costing product by Kiwiplan is written in VB6. ESP currently integrates with legacy Kiwiplan products written in FORTRAN via a TCP/IP protocol. Kiwiplan intend to slowly migrate modules written in FORTRAN to Java until all FORTRAN code is supplanted. This project is to investigate various alternatives of integrating the new Java products with the ESP product.

What I hope to gain from this Project

  • Knowledge of the integration technologies mentioned above.
  • An experience of the various challenges involved in getting code written in different languages to interact with each other.
  • An insight into problems faced in software development in the 'Real World'.
