Rolf Lindner (1937 Jena - 1979 Jena)

Professor at Jena University, Department of Mathematics

Together with Helmut Thiele he established the field of Inductive Inference in East Germany; see [R. Lindner and H. Thiele (eds.). Strukturerkennung diskreter kybernetischer Systeme. Volume 1 and 2. Humboldt-Universität Berlin, 1986].

For several years, R. Lindner was the head of the group “Mathematische Kybernetik und Rechentechnik” at the Department of Mathematics, Jena University. He supervised Master thesis and PhD projects, and his lectures have been on subjects such as logics, and coding or automata theory. He was Director for Research of the department in 1978-1979.

R. Lindner initiated a conference about the work of F. L. G. Frege (who was professor at Jena University between 1874 – 1918), which took place at Jena in 1979, followed by a 2^nd Frege conference at Schwerin in 1984. R. Lindner wrote the proposal for the 1979 Frege conference in 1975 and gave one of the three talks at the 1976 Frege colloquium at Jena University, entitled ``Frege’s zweidimensionaler Logik-Kalkül aus der Sicht einiger mathematisch-kybernetischer Aufgaben’’ [see H. Metzler, editor: Friedrich Ludwig Gottlob Frege – Zur Aktualität seines Werkes. Wiss. Beiträge der Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena, pages 47- 60, 1976]. R. Lindner passed away before the first Frege conference took place in May 1979.

In 1974 he attended the International Congress of Mathematicians at Vancouver, Canada (August 21-29), where he gave a talk on ``The Theory of Inference Operators’’ [see Proc. Int. Congress of Mathematicians, Volume 2, pages 471 – 475, 1974].
