Notable achievements

This is a selection of the more significant achievements of staff and students in the department that have been recognized nationally and/or internationally.

  • 2011 Jim Goodman made Fellow of ACM for contributions to parallel processor and memory system design.
  • 2011 Alexei Drummond awarded the New Zealand Association of Scientists Research Medal.
  • 2010 John Hosking elected Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand
  • 2010 Andre Nies elected Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand
  • 2010 Andre Nies invited to speak at International Congress of Mathematicians, the second NZ-based researcher to receive this. The ICM is held every 4 years and started in 1897.
  • 2009 Paul Denny awarded a National Tertiary Teaching Award for Sustained Excellence.
  • 2009 Andre Nies awarded New Zealand Mathematical Society Research Award for his contributions to mathematical logic and computability.
  • 2008 John Hosking awarded a National Tertiary Teaching Excellence Award for Sustained Excellence.
  • 2008 Cris Calude elected member of Academia Europaea (http://www.acadeuro.org/), the second NZ-based researcher to be so honoured.
  • 2008 Gill Dobbie and Gerald Weber successfully host the 34th VLDB conference, the main international conference in database research.
  • 2007 Alexei Drummond awarded the Hamilton Memorial Prize by the Royal Society of New Zealand.
  • 2007 Team CIA, consisting of students Robert Bowmaker (Computer Systems Engineering), Stephen Merriman (Computer Science) and Andrew Olsen (Software Engineering), and coached by Michael Dinneen, ranked 11th in world, 3rd in Asia-Pacific, 1st in Australasia, just behind Moscow State and ahead of Caltech, in ACM ICPC World Finals. There were over 6000 teams in regional competitions, reduced to 88 for the world finals, in the competition.
  • 2007 Jim Goodman elected Fellow of IEEE for contributions to shared-memory multiprocessor system design.
  • 2005 Bakh Khoussainov elected as a Fellow of Royal Society of New Zealand, the first member of our department to be elected.
  • 2002 Bakh Khoussainov awarded the New Zealand Mathematical Society Research Award for his contributions to computable model theory and the theory of automatic structures.
