COMPSCI705S1C Advanced Topics in Human Computer Interaction

Organization

All students in the course will complete a practical project (30%) in a small group (2). The project will be a small implementation of a novel aspect of HCI or an evaluation of a novel interface (provided). Each student will present a seminar and associated research report based on individual reading of research papers in the area (30%).

Assessment

The 30% for the seminar component will be split the following way:

• 5% for the interim report,
• 20% for the final report,
• 5% for the final presentation.

The 30% for the project component will be split the following way:

• 5% for the interim deliverables,
• 20% for the project deliverables as agreed,
• 5% for presentation.

Description

Careful consideration of the human aspects of computer systems is a major part of both commercial solution development and computer science research. Gerald Weber’s part of this course investigates current trends with domain specific user interface design particularly for enterprise systems. Beryl Plimmer’s part looks specifically at uses and technical infrastructure for pen-based interaction on a range of devices such as digital whiteboards, tablet PCs and PDAs.
