Bachelor of Technolgy (Information Technology)
Information technology refers to the hardware and software that are used to store, retrieve, exchange, and manipulate information. Computers and data communication are central to the management of information. The BTech (IT) therefore focuses on computers and communication.
The programme of study commences with a selection of courses that include Physics, Mathematics, Information Systems, and Programming. In later years it becomes more specialised and covers topics in Software Design, Database Systems, Data Communications, Internet programming, and Computer Vision. The final year involves a project that is usually carried out in the Industry. The degree can be awarded with or without Honours; Honours are earned by achieving high grades in the third and fourth years of the programme.
Careers in Information Technology
Information Technology is particularly important in the "service" industries such as banking, insurance, and communications. The majority of new jobs in recent years have been in these service industries. The particular slant towards Internet technologies and data communications in our BTech means that many of our graduates will work in these areas. There are significant job prospects in the area of Internet programming and software development for mobile devices. Graduates work in a variety of firms ranging from small new companies through to large multinationals. The initial salaries of our graduates are relatively high and increase rapidly as they gain experience and move to positions of responsibility.
